The foundation molding is easily cut from solid 1-by pine on the table saw in a two-part operation using a combination blade. 1. Cut the flat foundation molding stock to size. I used a 1 by 4 ripped to 3 in. wide. 2. Cut the short shoulder 'Ii in. from the edge and 3/s in. deep. 3. Reset the fence for a 3/s-in. cut and raise the blade about 1 1/i in. high. With the workpiece on edge and the waste side of the molding on the free side of the blade, cut partway up to GEORGIAN MA NTEL 37 Glue the L-shaped foundation molding into the rabbet in the back of the foundation boards.

Fit the plinth blocks. Once the pilasters are in place, measure the remaining space for the plinth blocks. On both sides of this mantel there was a small discrepancy between the wood floor and the slightly raised brick of the hearth. So I scribed the ends of the plinths to ht, made the cut with a jigsaw, and attached them to the fo undation with countersunk trim screws.

Screw the mantel shelf onto the blocks from underneath, and countersink the screws.
